DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COLOGNE, EAU DE TOILETTE, EAU DE PARFUM, EXTRAIT DE PARFUM

What is the difference between eau de cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum and extract?

The difference is mainly based on two aspects, one more linked to production (i.e. the different alcohol concentration of the formula), the other more linked to creation, i.e. the choice of raw materials.

The colognes are, to some extent, all daughters of the first Aqua Mirabilis by Gian Paolo Feminis and Jean Marie Farina. Uncle and nephew, in the 17th century, invented the formula of a perfume which even today, expressed in different ways, shares a sense of lightness and vitality, which has become indispensable for those who adopt a sporty style. They are fragrances so linked to a concept of natural well-being that they can almost be used as rubs all over the body due to their low alcohol content and reduced perfume concentration (around 5%) and become, in a more masculine vision, aftershave lotions.

In eau de toilette the strong concentration of perfume, around 8-12%, and a greater presence of alcohol accentuate evaporation and emphasize the initial impact. Following traditional composition recipes, the creative perfumer insists on top notes to underline liveliness, choosing sparkling notes such as citrus, marine or aromatic notes. The head prevails in the composition, subsequently leaving room for a delicate trail, for more casual or discreet creations.

In eau de parfum, whose alcohol concentration ranges from approximately 12 to 18%, the heart represents the most important part of the formula. The creator perfumer enhances the notes of fresh flowers and fruity notes in the composition for a formula that enhances richness and seduction.

Perfume, essence and extract are the products in which the concentration of the perfume in the alcohol is strongest, the percentages range from 20 to 40%, maximum diffusion and persistence therefore become relevant criteria. Consequently, in addition to concentration, an optimal result should enhance the composition of the fund. The choice of raw materials falls on notes such as precious woods, greedy notes, musk, amber and musky notes which enrich the perfume in personality.
