PINEAPPLE

Pineapples are believed to originate from southern Brazil and Paraguay. Christopher Columbus introduced it to Europe, initiating a trade network that exported it worldwide.
Pineapples grow on the eponymous plant, a bush between 50 and 100 cm tall, primarily cultivated in Central and South America. At the center of the plant, surrounded by sword-shaped, arched, spiny gray-green leaves, grows the fruit: a large oval pinecone topped with a tuft of green leaves, with fleshy and succulent pulp.
Pineapple is considered the king of tropical fruits, and was called pineapple by the English for its resemblance to a pinecone (pine) and for its juicy core, reminiscent of an apple (apple).
The natives who cultivated it called it "anana," from which the name in Italian and other languages derives. Spanish explorers, however, called it "pinecone of the Indies," and Europeans who could afford this exclusive fruit nicknamed it "royal pinecone."

Despite the hardened exterior, the sweet flesh of the pineapple has been wowing us for millennia. Pineapples are thought to have originated in the Brazilian rainforests and were harvested and spread throughout South and Central America. When Christopher Columbus stumbled across this fruit in the 15th Century, his taste buds approved and soon pineapple joined him on his travels, gradually being introduced to warm climates across the world.

A mouth-watering fruity note, pineapple adds an exotic and refreshing facet of green. When combined with coconut, pineapple reproduces the piña colada note.
