The woody family is characterized by natural raw materials (cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, oak moss, ...), synthetic molecules and reproductions. The variety of woods produces drier (cedar and vetiver), softer (sandalwood, amber woods) or humid (patchouli leaves) notes.
The woody notes give character, warmth and breadth to the creation.
In men's compositions, woods have been present for a long time and often constitute a sort of "spine" around which fragrances develop. They can be refreshed with aromatic, marine or citrus facets, or made sensual and enveloping with spicy, leather, oriental, fruity or gourmand and powdery touches.
Timeless progenitor, Pino Silvestre by Vidal starts the lineage of fresh woodies, followed over the years by Fahrenheit by Dior with vegetal and floral facets, by Kenzo pour Homme with a marine top note and by Déclaration by Cartier with its lively fresh spices.
It is precisely the spices, the more traditional and dry ones present in the historic Vetiver by Guerlain and Egoïste by Chanel that infuse the compositions with an intense and voluptuous vein.
For feminine variations, we had to wait until the 90s with Feminité du Bois by Serge Lutens to hear a cedarwood-sandalwood accord. In combination with floral or musky notes, woody accords give life to subtle and original fragrances of elite refinement.
In recent years, a new generation of notes has been spreading significantly: i amber woods.
They were born in 1949 thanks to Firmenich's research director, Max Stoll, who discovered Ambrox, an isomer of ambergris. At the beginning of the 1980s, Firmenich made the patents on this molecule public, thus giving other companies the opportunity to begin research and then the production of new versions, effectively decreeing the birth of the expression "amber woods".
The word amber, in this case, does not refer to the universe of amber notes but rather is a generic term that groups together a family of molecules with particular properties: grouped under this term are molecules with a woody, burning, pungent and intense odor like Cashmeran, Cédramber, Iso E Super, Karanal, Amber Xtreme, Lorenox.
They are highly appreciated above all for their persistence and diffusion properties.
